Allow and Go With The Flow

One of the lessons I’ve learned in life is that it is always better to go with the flow rather than try to force anything. This was a lesson I learned after much forcing. As a young adult I felt I was responsible for controlling everything in my life and I mean everything. Well, while that thought is partially true–we are responsible for our own lives–the challenge was in the word control. The definition of the word control involves power, particularly exerting power over some entity or person. It means one person or group is restrained in some way. How can that possibly be a good thing?

Sometimes we try hard to control people in our lives or situations we are confronted with. We want things to go our way. But here’s the thing, we can’t and shouldn’t try to control anybody but ourselves. As humans we have freedom to make choices. We choose who we spend time with, where we go, what we do, and how we do it. When we find ourselves in a situation or relationship that no longer resonates with our true selves, we can do as the Course in Miracles instructs and choose again. We can choose to stay in that situation or relationship or we can choose to remove ourselves from it.

After years of struggle and stress because of this belief that I alone could control my world, I couldn’t understand why I still did not have the life I wanted. Eventually the stress would lead to cancer, but even that was not enough to jar me into understanding. We all get there when we’re ready and although I am a good student, I am a slow student. I take my time getting to understanding. I am the tortoise, not the hare. As I approached midlife, I found Science of Mind philosophy and that is where I started my growth back toward my truth, my purpose; and restored my intuition. At this point in my life I began to see that it is so much easier to go with the flow rather than try to force anything to happen.

The best analogy I heard came from a practitioner who would begin meditation sessions with the visualization of floating down a river. I have always been naturally drawn to bodies of water so this resonated with me immediately. It feels good to lie in a body of water and let the waves and ripples move your body. Water is holy, it’s magic, it sustains life, and symbolizes the Divine. If you place yourself in the arms of the Divine and allow rather than try to force anything, you move much more freely and in directions that feel good. There can be rocks in the river but if you relax and allow the water to carry you downstream, you will find that the water will move you out of the way of these rocks or help you to relax and softly move over them. Just like the water, the Divine will help us move around and through any challenges we encounter on our path.

What are you trying to force in your life? Perhaps it is time to relax and go with the flow. If you enjoyed this post, please share it with a friend.
