The Magic of Music

Music is magical. I’m not talking about just the magic found in the combination of instruments, although that is magical, but also the magic found in the lyrics. I find a lot of things magical, but music is one of those magical things I feel I need in my life on a daily basis. Hunter Thompson once said,

Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.

I find this true. Do you? Perhaps you listen to music when doing housework because you find that it provides the Energy or Fuel you need to complete the task. I am eclectic in the music I listen to and I will listen to almost anything. The right music sets the tone for whatever I am doing. I work to music. I meditate to music. I drive listening to music. I know a young lady who showers to music. I find that pretty neat. Imagine cleansing your body and soul at the same time!

The other day I found myself listening to Bonnie Raitt. Back in my younger days I was in love with this woman and her voice. I grew up listening to the sultry, bluesy, folk songs of Bonnie Raitt. As I listened with joy, I found the lyrics were different for me now because I am different from that young girl in the 80s. I listened to Nick of Time and heard,

When did the choices get so hard
With so much more at stake
Life gets mighty precious
When there’s less of it to wa-a-a-aste

Scared you’ll run out of time.

Just when I thought I’d had enough
And all my tears were shed
No promise left unbroken
There were no painful words unsaid

Yo-o-o-u came along and showed me
I could leave it all behind
You opened up my heart again
And then much to my surprise

I found love, baby, love in the nick of time
(Love in the nick of time)
I found love darlin’, love in the nick of time
(Love in the nick of time.)
I found love baby, love in the nick of time.

Thirty or so years ago I heard these lines as finding love in another person. While that may still be the intention Bonnie had when she wrote them, I now hear them differently. I now hear these words as falling in love with Love, Universe, the Divine, ME. My relationship with the God in Me has grown and the result is a more open heart, more sensitivity, more intuitiveness, a stronger spiritual connection with others in the world. Once I found Love in myself, unconditional love–because let’s face it, love with conditions isn’t love--I fell in love with so much more. I found love in the nick of time. Now I am wondering how many other love songs I can listen to and hear this message. What songs spark your Energy and provide you with Fuel?
